Hallo Caleb, thanks for your answer. I wonder if the 8255 driver you mentioned has been written for an ISA board and might therefore not be applicable to the PCI board (PCI-48H) . Reading the book by Rubini et al. on Linux device drivers I came to the conclusion that the programming of a pci board is much more complicated than that of an ISA board as the on board pci controller must be programmed - may be I am completely wrong....
