Ed,

It really depends on what pci chip you are using, as they are all programmed 
differently for dma.  For isa dma, the dma controller was on the motherboard 
so it wasn't dependent so much on the plug in card.  The kernel functions 
pci_alloc_consistent() (to allocate a buffer the chip can dma to/from along 
with an address you can pass to the chip) and pci_set_master() (to enable bus 
master dma) are also useful.
