question about testing kernel prior to build

Hello.

Not having built or used comedi, but researching it for some applications
I have a simple question inspired by 'what I have heard' vs. 'what I have
done.'

Does comedi require non-vanilla kernel mods or does it simply query the
kernel source prior to building?

What experience has been had using comedi under modified RedHat kernels
and/or gcc 2.96 (RedHat modified compiler) ??
