It's actually an extension of Compact PCI (cPCI) which uses the PCI electrical standard with the EuroCard physical standard (like VME). It's ideal of rugged embedded systems. PXI adds some bus signals to allow multiple cards to sync together and trigger each other. It allows you to build up complex test systems. It's the PCI answer to the VME instrumentation extension (whose name I can't remember). -Dan
