Make sure your parallel port is set up in the BIOS to be in standard mode, and not EPP or any other enhanced mode. Make sure your pins aren't loaded down either. For a project I did a few years ago using comedi and the parallel port, I had to add in some transistor circuitry to be able to drive the relays as my parallel port only could source about 5 ma of current.
