Can you "modprobe adl_pci9118"?

Maybe your system has a problem autoloading modules.  Do you have 
CONFIG_KMOD configured in the kernel?  (This is described as "Automatic 
kernel module loading" for 2.6 or "Kernel module loader" for 2.4.)
