A good place to start learning about Linux kernel drivers is the book on
the subject (written by several of the kernel device system maintainers).
It's available online for free:

http://lwn.net/Kernel/LDD3/

The 3rd edition was written for 2.6.10, so the book is somewhat out of
date, but most of the major subsystems haven't changed drastically. In
any case, comedi has a nice compatibility layer that takes care of the
relevant differences between various kernel versions.
