I myself run some database-based wiki, and never had anything to maintain. Probably the most sophisticated task is to choose a skin :) Wiki engine got natural way of keeping eye on changes by keeping all versions of documents and by sending notifications to maintainers. Probably, forum-like registration (with good protection from automatic bot registration - spammers usually do not enter their spam by hand) is enough. I do not think that premoderation of accounts is necessary, as if I would like to enter some small correction, I need first to undergo long registration procedure, so I think better way is just post-moderate all changes. Wiki also got natural discussion engine so one can discuss the given information right away.
