Re: Linux Data acquisition Recommendation

Not sure if this is of interest to you, but whenever I'm asked about
data-acquisition software, I always recommend using the Python
programming language. I'm (slowly) putting together a web-site dedicated
to developing data-acquisition systems with Python, as a free,
cross-platform replacement for Labview.

See www.cole.uklinux.net/PythonLab/PythonLab-Home.html

While this web-page is very incomplete (and being my hobby, probably
looks very amateurish. I don't get much time for it...) it contains
links to related resources, My company uses python extensively for our
data-acquisition requirements on both linux and windows.

As far as Comedi supported cards go, I've always found NI E-series cards
work well. I posted complete python-wrappers to the Comedi list a while
back. These allow you to call Comedi functions directly from Python.
Great for rapid prototyping. On Win32, we have python-wrappers for the
NI-DAQ win32 drivers these NI cards.

I've also tried a UEI I/O card (www.ueidaq.com). The cards are cheaper
than NI, with comparably specs. and UEI advertise fill linux support.
Unfortunately, the technical-support from UEI for the linux drivers was
very disappointing and their driver API is messy and their documentation
was terrible. Give them a go if you're prepared to push them for proper
support. Provided Comedi provides the features you need, stick with
Comedi.

Let me know if you'd like more info.

PS. I'd be happy to hear comments/suggestions/contributions for my
Python Data-acquisition page from anyone. Note, I've got to change the
name of this page, as PythonLab already exists.
