Direct timer access

I would like to set up a 500kHz timer on an NI PCI-6052E or PCI-6733 without
interfering with the other operations on the cards.  Do I have to set up a
bogus command and poll for junk data to find each timer cycle, or is there a
better way?  Is there a good solution in user space?
