Incremental Encoder in Comedi

Dear Comedi user,

my IO Card has an encoder chip, which computes the position of a incremental
encoder. The value just has to be read from an address.

My Question is, how do I implement it in the driver? Is there a subdevice
called "encoder chip"?
Do I get the value with "comedi_data_read" or is there another way?
